This project serves as a tribute to Arrival, one of my all-time favourite sci-fi films directed by Denis Villeneuve and photographed by Bradford Young.
The main purpose of this project was to translate live action cinematic techniques to CGI i.e. how a certain scene would have been set up and photographed practically, the types of lighting and lenses used, camera movements, editing techniques etc
This also allowed me to use MetaHumans more convincingly, akin to a director getting a performance out of actors to convey emotions for certain scenes.
The process involved setting up roughly blockouts for camera angles, refining those blockouts with high detailed models, doing some preliminary light tests and then experimenting with various render settings until I was satisfied with the outcome.
For this project, I utilized both Lumen and Pathtracing for rendering.
I did the colour grading in Davinci Resolve which is now my main editing and colour grading software.
