A full-CGI exploration recreating the iconic architectural and natural environments of Ex Machina, reimagined through real-time cinematic workflows in Unreal Engine 5.
Reconstructing the distinctive visual language of Ex Machina—its seamless blend of stark modernist architecture and immersive natural landscapes—while achieving film-grade realism within a real-time engine posed a unique technical and artistic challenge.
The goal was not just replication, but reinterpretation: capturing mood, scale, and cinematic nuance while pushing Unreal Engine’s capabilities in lighting, materials, and procedural generation.

The project leveraged a hybrid cinematic pipeline combining real-time rendering with traditional film workflows.
Environments were built using Unreal Engine 5, with the forest ecosystem generated through Procedural Content Generation (PCG) systems to achieve organic variation at scale.
A custom anamorphic lens workflow was explored, inspired by Panavision and ARRI ZEISS optics, to replicate authentic cinematic distortion, depth, and composition.
Materials and surface detailing were crafted in Substance Painter, while modeling was handled in Plasticity and Blender. Final grading and color treatment were completed in DaVinci Resolve to achieve a filmic finish
The outcome is a visually rich, fully CGI environment that captures the essence of Ex Machina while showcasing the power of Unreal Engine 5 as a cinematic tool—blurring the line between real-time rendering and traditional film production.
