This adaptation of the caped crusader was one of the best versions of the character out there. I was blown away by the direction, cinematography, and sound design, so I decided to recreate the look in Unreal Engine.
For the city layout, I used Epic Games’ City Sample Building pack. I set up lighting that simulated an overcast night with faint moonlight filtering through the clouds. To add depth to the scene, I used a standard exponential height fog as a base layer and added radial fog cards between buildings.
To light up the foreground fog, I animated a red point light to turn on and off beneath the character (Niagara FX).
The camera angle used a standard rule of thirds technique, which directs the viewer’s eye towards the character. I rendered the scene at an aspect ratio of 2:35:1.
I color-graded the scene in Davinci Resolve and added a radial blur around the edges to replicate the look that Greg Fraiser achieved in the film.
